Espoo/Vienna/Munich, 10 June 2021: “As important as the air we breathe” – air quality has always played one of the most central roles in our lives – and in times of a global pandemic, indoor air quality control takes on added importance. Pollutants in the air – including CO2 (carbon dioxide) – also generally pose one of the greatest risks to health. This makes it all the more important to keep a constant eye on the quality of indoor air. With the “Better Air” campaign, Sigfox Germany now offers a powerful, easy-to-manage and turnkey solution for gaining control over air quality. For all interested commercial customers and public institutions, a complete test package is therefore available for a limited period at a special price – to try out how easy and uncomplicated it is to keep an eye on the air quality.
Air quality, CO2-Levels und health
Too high a CO2 concentration can have consequences. Already from 1000 ppm (parts per million) CO2 – this value is considered the so-called “Pettenkofer number” – the general well-being can deteriorate and complaints such as drowsiness, inattention, reduced concentration or headaches can occur.
At the same time, the risk of infection increases with the carbon dioxide content. Because where there is a high CO2 concentration, there are also particularly many aerosols and germs in the air. A scientific study in which about 30 people stayed in a classroom for four hours – one of whom had acute flu – confirms the higher risk of infection when the CO2 level is too high. At 1,000 ppm, five people were infected, at 2,000 ppm already twelve and at 3,000 ppm 15 people were infected. Increased ventilation can counteract the risk of infection.
Are Germans good at airing?
There are no fixed, legally binding regulations for a specific or maximum CO2 value in indoor spaces in Germany. However, there are various guideline, orientation and target values for the maximum concentration of carbon dioxide that should prevail indoors. In Germany, a hygienic guideline value of 1,500 ppm applies to the amount of CO2 in indoor air, whereby a distinction is made according to the age of the people in the room.
In general, the guideline value is that from a concentration of 1,000 ppm CO2 in the room air, it should be ventilated, but from 2,000 ppm it must be ventilated in order to achieve and guarantee an adequate quality of the room air. If the concentration exceeds 2,000 ppm several times a day, there is insufficient air exchange.
Carbon dioxide measurements and analyses were carried out in the more than 40,000 schools in Germany several years ago, and in most cases the results were unsatisfactory. In Munich and the surrounding area, for example, the CO2 concentration was over 1,000 ppm during 82 per cent of the teaching time. The maximum value measured during the heating period was 5,359 ppm. In Berlin, CO2 monitoring yielded similar results, with 80 per cent of appropriate CO2 levels being exceeded. The peak value, which was also measured during the heating period, was 6,000 ppm. Measurements of carbon dioxide in classrooms also took place in Erfurt, which recorded 86 per cent exceedances and a peak value of 4,998 ppm.
The simple solution for smart indoor air monitoring
For determining the CO2 content in the air and other parameters such as humidity and temperature, there are now sensors that are very easy to install and operate, which, when smartly networked, not only make local monitoring possible, but also allow the air quality in the entire building to be controlled simply and reliably. A new package that has now been launched on the market essentially consists of three parts:
- Maintenance-free measurement for years: The air quality sensors from Connected Inventions are mounted on the walls in the rooms to be monitored. The integrated replaceable battery allows maintenance-free operation for several years and eliminates the need for a power connection. Moreover, neither WLAN nor Bluetooth nor LAN is necessary.
- 0G is in the air: The wireless transmission of data is handled by Sigfox’s 0G radio network, which is available in 72 countries – no SIM card is required, the connection is purchased directly with the sensor.
- The “Air Cockpit” provides an overview: the collected data is then processed in the cloud and visualised in the “Air Cockpit” by cubido/ACP to a definable group of participants in an appealing and individually adjustable way. Via 2D QR code (attached near the sensor as a simple printout), a visitor can also get all information about the current indoor air quality on his smartphone.
