Sigfox operators launch initiative: making goods traffic from Ukraine and Eastern Europe transparent with IoT technology

  • Sigfox operators launch initiative to drive forward 0G network expansion along the trans-European rail corridor – for greater security and transparency in goods and food supply chains
  • Sigfox Ukraine and Heliot Europe plan to provide IoT radio infrastructure for coverage along the train corridor from Ukraine to Western Europe

Munich/Stuttgart, May 17, 2023 – Heliot Europe, the largest operator of the 0G network in Europe, and Sigfox Ukraine have launched a joint initiative to expand coverage of the trans-European rail corridor. The expansion of the 0G network is intended to make the transportation of goods via the rail network, which connects Western and Eastern Europe as well as Ukraine via Romania, Poland and Slovakia with the northern Adriatic part of Slovenia, safer, more predictable and more transparent.

Blaž Golob, Country Manager of Heliot Europe in Slovenia, Martin Liboswar, Country Manager of Heliot Europe in Austria and Dmytro Ozerov, Country Manager of Sigfox Ukraine, pledged their commitment to the following goals at the founding ceremony, which took place at the end of April on the fringes of the Logimat industry trade fair in Stuttgart:

  1. To create better predictability in the grain supply chain and thus ensure greater security in the food supply.
  2. To enable transparent tracking of goods along the entire network of the trans-European rail corridor.
  3. Encourage rail companies and stakeholders in logistics to expand cooperation via the European IoT network platform 0G
IoT technology for the Ukraine – Western Europe train corridor

Tomáš Pavlíček, COO of Heliot Europe, commented on the launch of the initiative: “Trade relations between the countries of Eastern and Western Europe are becoming increasingly important. The expansion of the 0G network along the trans-European rail corridor is an important prerequisite for ensuring that goods and food supplies can be transported even more efficiently and safely in the future. The launch of our initiative is an important milestone in this respect.”

The specific sub-areas include strengthening the 0G network for cross-border goods traffic and intermodal logistics. With optimized networking along the railroad lines, the initiative will also create the conditions for the digital transformation of cities and enable applications such as the digital measurement of water and gas supplies and waste management. One specific project is already in the planning stage: Sigfox Ukraine and Heliot Europe have agreed to ensure IoT network coverage along the sections of the route from Ukraine to Western Europe that are within the companies’ sphere of influence.
